This webinar evaluates bear markets over the past 52 years.

The Standard & Poor's 500 entered a bear market on June 13, 2022. In recent weeks, stock prices nosedived, heightening fears.

Analyzing publicly data available since 1970 (specifically seven key indexes representing “core” asset classes) this class presents an historical perspective of bear markets that many investment fiduciaries may find highly relevant.

The annual performance of the S&P 500 over the past 52 years is contrasted against a diversified securities portfolio comprised of seven asset classes: large-company and small-company US stock, non-US stock, US bonds, US cash, US REITs, and commodities.

The 52-year correlation coefficients of the seven asset core portfolio are illustrated, along with analysis of the time required to break even after the 2008 meltdown for the S&P 500 Index versus the seven-asset portfolio.

Learning objectives:

  • Review the importance of including diverse asset classes in portfolio construction
  • Learn the return, standard deviation, and correlation characteristics of seven asset classes since 1970
  • Analyze the length of breakeven periods following equity market decline of 2008
  • View charts and tables that can help your clients put “bear markets” into perspective
