Lack Of European Effectiveness Is Showing Up In The Political Arena

Sarkozy’s less than stellar showing at the polls this weekend during the first round of voting in France illustrates a deeper issue--one that is injecting new uncertainty into the global markets.
 
The failure of the European Union to adequately address the sovereign debt crisis is resulting in a more extreme form of politics, as exemplified by the triumph of François Hollande over Sarkozy.
 
The close numbers of the top two contenders will be clarified in a runoff scheduled for May 6. Business activity in April also fell at a faster than expected rate across Europe. Budget talks in the Netherlands fell apart as the country tries to keep its AAA rating and comply with the demands of the European Union.
 
Manufacturing in China contracted at a greater-than-expected pace even though the rate of contraction did show improvement.
 
These factors along with earnings news due out this week could mean a volatile week of April 23 for equities.
