Andrew, as a 25 year spouse of an Englishman and one who lives part time in England, I've begun to offer to whomever comments about the "cute" English accent, that it is about the ONLY thing anyone ever says about the English!
I am pleased to report that while in England, folk over there rarely comment on my American accent. Even after 30+ years in the US (and now a citizen) my husband must have at least 3 to 5 mentions of his accent per day. I hope you will take this as it is intended-- in kindness.
