A New Data Transfer Technology That Will Replace USB Launched Yesterday

It's called Thunderbolt, it promises data transfer rates that are 20 times faster than a USB connection, and it debuted yesterday on MacBook Pros.

"The standard is rated at 10 Gbps over two channels, which works out to transferring a Blu-ray disc in less than 30 seconds," TechCrunch reported. "That’s 20 times faster than USB 2.0, and 12 times faster than the industry speed demon, FireWire 800. Engadget stated in an early Thunderbolt MacBook Pro demo they watched a 5GB file transfer in “just a few seconds.”'

I suppose speed is good if you edit and transfer video files all the time. But for documents and PDFs, USB is plenty fast. The last thing I need are more cables on my desk!

I'm waiting for the day when I can copy pictures from my camera over to my computer via WiFi. No wires required.
