Personalizing Crucial Conversations About Investing With Clients And Prospects

To conduct crucial conversations about a client’s investment plan, this class teaches financial advisors a practical way to illustrate the most important concepts affecting investor success.

The class demonstrates a series of “what if” scenarios educating a client or prospect about the factors crucial in achieving investment success: volatility, asset allocation, expense reduction, and inflation, including:

♦  What is the impact on the client’s expected annual portfolio withdrawals of allocating an additional 5%, 10%, or more of a portfolio to equities?  And how would it affect their expected portfolio value after 25 years of withdrawals?

♦  What is the impact of reducing the client’s overall investment expenses by 20-, 40-, 60- basis points (bps) on a portfolio’s annual withdrawal amounts? And how does it impact their portfolio’s expected value after 25 years of withdrawals?

♦  What is the likely impact of eliminating bonds from the client’s portfolio, on their annual portfolio withdrawals, and on their expected portfolio value after 25 years of withdrawals?

♦  What is the impact of implementing an annual cost of living adjustment (COLA) based on the performance of my portfolio on the client’s  anticipated annual portfolio withdrawal and on expected portfolio value after 25 years of withdrawals?

An Excel spreadsheet for demonstrating the what-if illustrations to clients and prospects is available from instructor Craig Israelsen for $200 and includes updates for the calendar year.

Craig Israelsen, Ph.D., began teaching this course about low-expense investing on Advisors4Advisors in April 2009. All his classes are archived for members to view.

The Impact of Asset Allocation On Retirement Income

Trade-offs in retirement using two popular withdrawal strategies. How much is withdrawn from a retirement portfolio each year is obviously influenced by the asset allocation of the portfolio, but just how much? And what are the trade-offs in choosing to build an aggressive or conservative retirement portfolio?

Low-Expense Investing Course By Craig Israelsen

This learning objective of this monthly series of classes by Craig Israelsen, Ph.D., since inception in April 2009, is to teach professionals advising clients on tax, financial and investment planning how to build low-expense broadly diversified core-portfolios, applying modern portfolio theory statistical techniques and quantitative financial economic analysis.

Although each class teaches a solution to one of a broad array of investment problems practitioners face every day, the main point of each class targets fiduciary practices on designing broadly diversified core portfolio models for 10-basis points, employing indexes and ETFs, and earning fees for personal tax and financial planning services, or specialized investment advice.

Very good. I appreciate the depth of research that Craig put into this work. I liked the visuals as well as the conceptual discussions that the model can generate. The model uses real and relevant variables that are often discussed but not depicted graphically or assessed from an impact on performance perspective. Since the model offers excellent insights on expected portfolio outcomes, I believe the A4A community would benefit from a multi-part series using the tool to illustrate various scenarios.
