For years, I've been a fan of Sony Vaio ultraportable laptops. They're small enough to carry around anywhere and pack the power of a desktop.  Beause of their small size, I haven't felt the need to buy a tablet.

The latest model I bought is a Z series with a 2.8 GHz processor, i7 m640 chip, and a 256 GB solid state hard drive. It aso has eight GBs of RAM and the 64 bit version of Windows.  It's about 4 pounds and gets about nine hours of battery life with the extended life battery. It's a great machine, but it cost $3200 when I bought it four months or five ago.

However, the Lenovo ThinkPad X220 recently reviewed by PC World looks like a real contender. The specifications of the model that was reviewed match up well with the bare bones Sony Z series but at a lower price.

You can upgrade the processor, RAM, and hard drive and it will get you everything a state-of-the-art Sonys Z offers but at a few hundred dollars less.
