Financial Economic History, Mark Higgins' Quarterly Course

This four-credit elective course draws on financial economic lessons from history to inform a professional’s investment outlook.

Financial markets are shaped by forces that are simple and stable over long periods of time, but periodically are destabilized by major historic events.

War and peace, the rise and fall of empires, climate change, natural disasters, pandemics and other historic events, over spans of time much longer than humans live or can remember periodically bend the arc of history.

Consequences of these infrequent influential episodic forces in history are only evident to those who witnessed comparable events in the past, or who study history carefully. Studying these episodes makes it easier to foresee the consequences of emerging events.

A professional owes a duty to clients not to limit their financial economic knowledge to their own life experience.

Every quarter, a new class explores a chapter in history repeating historic events and how powerful forces influencing us today affected investors in the past.
“The History And Importance Of The Federal Reserve,” the first class in this quarterly course, will be conducted live on Tuesday, January 17, 2023 at 4 p.m. ET for CPA CPE as well as CFP® CE.  Topics for each quarterly class will be determined by the events unfolding at that time.

Mark J. Higgins, CFA, CFP®
Mark is a former institutional investment consultant and financial historian. His classes draw from his upcoming book, Becoming An Enlightened Investor. Prior to founding The Enlightened Investor, LLC, Mark served as a senior investment consultant for more than 12 years. In this role, he advised the trustees of large pension plans, foundations, endowments, and insurance reserves with aggregate assets of more than $60 billion. He discovered that understanding financial history proved much more valuable than tracking the latest economic data. He also discovered that there was no single book that recounted the full financial history of the United States. Becoming an Enlightened Investor seeks to fill this void. The insights are intended to help investors contextualize current events and thereby improve their investment decisions. The book will be published and distributed by the Greenleaf Book Group and will be available for purchase online and in bookstores in the Fall of 2023
