Harry Rady is looking to sell his asset management firm so he can feed his institutional perspective through an existing network of retail advisors.

It's an interesting twist on the usual way this story plays out, in which an asset manager buys a brokerage firm to get a captive distribution channel.

And from the advisor side, there is plenty of talk about transforming advisors into relationship managers handing off the actual job of running the investments to third parties in the process. But the idea of bringing the investments back in-house is something new.

Having a superstar manager working exclusively for your clients may be a differentiator in a world where "open architecture" approaches are gaining traction just about everywhere else.
