Android has been hugely successful, but phone and tablet makers who use Google's operating system risk getting sued by Apple and Microsoft for patent infringement. Motorola Mobility's 17,000 patents should help thwart that legal maneuvering, notes SlashGear.

The aquisition already shakes up the competitive landscape and could hurt Microsoft Windows Phone 7.
