The committee continues its oversight of spectrum auctions for broadband. These auctions will help meet soaring demand for wireless broadband services. They will also serve as a nationwide public safety net.

The auctions originated in the House Energy and Commerce Committee as part of the JOBS (Jumpstart Our Business Startups) Act.

The legislation was designed to create more jobs by getting more spectrum into the pipeline to meet demands by consumers for more mobile broadband, to create a public safety network, and to ensure that broadcasters are treated fairly.

Meanwhile, House Small Business Committee chair Sam Graves (R-MO) criticized the president for not meeting with small business leaders as one of the three groups he is consulting to resolve the fiscal cliff issue.

Graves said small businesses are the nation’s chief job creators. They cannot afford a big increase in tax rates and small businesses are concerned about a one-size-fits all approach that may add undue tax burdens that is already causing job creation by small businesses to slow significantly.
