While the industry is speculating about at least one potential buyer for Securities America, the dearth of public candidates indicates the fundamental fact that there are too many sellers and not enough buyers out there right now.

According to one influential recruiter, demand for independent brokerage firms from the insurance channel in particular has tapered off.

 

And unless larger IBDs are willing to grow through bolt-on acquisitions, private equity firms are shaping up as the best option for would-be sellers.

 

Otherwise, as he notes, it's probably easier -- and less risky -- for firms to simply hire individual reps away, instead of buying the whole store.
